Brief

Jessica Marie Ingold Designs is my own personal Brand that was created to be my professional identity in preparation for the completion of my Degree and entry into the Professional Design Industry.

My personal brand is Quirky, Warm and Friendly which is an accurate reflection of my personality. I wanted to present myself as being elegant but not Pretentious. Friendly and Approachable in equal measure. As well as being Warm and Empathetic towards clients and colleagues alike.

For this project, I needed:

  • Brand Colours

  • Brand Logo

  • Typography Choices

Role

Project Manager, Designer.

Tools

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop.

Quirky, Warm and Friendly are words that are an accurate reflection of my personality, and I wanted my brand to present this. I consider my work as being elegant but not Pretentious. Friendly and Approachable in equal measure. Empathy towards clients and colleagues is also an important aspect of my personality and ethic that I wanted to be reflected in my logo and brand.

From the very beginning of this project, I wanted a Monogram Logo using my initials. Considering Typography is not my strong suit, having Wayne Thompson as a mentor was a blessing. After many iterations of logos using different Fonts and layouts, I finally decided on the font Questa Light for the Logo and Acumin Extra Condensed Extra Light for the ‘Design’.

By researching colour theory and referring to the keywords I listed at the beginning of this project to describe myself, I began to research Colour Theory. I wanted two colours for my brand; one to represent the warm and friendly part of my personality, and the other to represent the elegant style of my design style.

Font Choice

Once I had decided on keywords that described my visual style and my personality, I began experimenting with various fonts that would represent my personal brand well.

After many tries and failures, I decided on a Slab Serif font called Questa Light. I felt this font was elegant and clean and would work well as the base for decoration for my Brand.

After experimenting with the font structure using Create outlines in Illustrator, I realised that combining the Capital J and M of Questa Light created my initials of JMI.

Questa Light Customisation

I wanted to customise the font to create a more approachable and friendly style that would fit more with my brand. To do this, I researched Flourishes that would be appropriate.

Considering Typography is not my forte, I had great help from my Course Mentor and Teacher, Wayne Thompson. He kindly experimented with the Font and created the Flourish that is found on my finished Logo.

By adding a Tittle to the logo (the dot above the M), I was able to create a Monogram Logo that uses my names initials.

Main Logo and Alternate Logo

The main logo of JMI Design will be placed on all official material in the brand such as website and documentation.

The alternate logo will be placed on any merchandise such as button badges or social media as a display logo. This version is more decorative and will only be used as merchandise/social media/website.

Logo Font Pairing

To finish the logo, I added the word Design to clarify what my personal brand will offer in the future.

In order to create contrast with Questa Light, I chose Acumin Extra Condensed Extra Light as the secondary font in my Monogram.

Acumin Condensed fits well with Questa Light as it is a sans serif. The Condensed nature of Acumin Condensed further creates contrast with the more rounded structure of Questa Light.

Website Portfolio Font Pairing

In order to create enough difference with the Logo, I chose Playfair Display Regular and Open Sans Regular and Condensed for my Website. The script font Playfair Display adds a quirky and elegant character to my portfolio, especially when paired with the neutral Sans Serif font Open Sans. This suits my personality well.

Colour Scheme

Personal Brand Colour Scheme

Once I was happy with the logo as a whole, I began experimenting with colours that represent my brand.

After much deliberation and experiments, I decided on a Dark Royal Blue and Dark Peach for Jessica Marie Ingold Designs.

Combining elegance and warmth, these two colours represent my personality and design style.

Website Additional Colours

I added two additional colour to create enough contrast with my Brand Colours. Both the Dark Royal Blue and Dark Peach are bold colours so adding lighter colours would disrupt the vibrancy.

The first colour is a tinted version of the Dark Peach colour of my Brand. Instead of a 100% white, I decided to make a Light Peach.

The second is also a tinted version of the Royal Blue colour.
